Our journey to discovering Playa Sonrisa Clothing Optional Resort is a tale of love, discovery, and the pursuit of a lifestyle focused on relaxation and a deep connection with nature.
A fortuitous discovery
As seasoned travelers, we were searching for a new business adventure when we stumbled upon Playa Sonrisa, a clothing-optional couples resort for sale in Mexico. We jumped on the next available plane and headed back down to Mexico, where we often visit for diving vacations. We took the opportunity to explore the nearby towns of Mahahaul and Xcalak, trying to get a feel for the area to see if this was a place we could call home. Drawn by the pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, we quickly fell in love with the tranquil atmosphere of Playa Sonrisa, a naturist resort that had been serving guests for over 22 years. Although we weren't specifically looking for a naturist oriented business, Playa Sonrisa embodied the laid-back vibe and the opportunity to run our own beachfront resort we were seeking. We decided to dive in with open minds. Playa Sonrisa, meaning "Smile Beach," lived up to its name from the moment we arrived. With lush tropical gardens, charming accommodations, and breathtaking views of the Caribbean, it was love at first sight.
A dream realized
Realizing we had found something truly special, we made the bold decision to purchase Playa Sonrisa Resort, committing to keep it clothing-optional. We were excited to carry on the legacy of the previous owners, who had nurtured the resort for 22 years. Our vision was to create a space where guests could embrace naturism while enjoying the stunning surroundings. Despite knowing little about hospitality, we jumped in with both feet, fueled by our passion for entrepreneurship. Our commitment to creating a welcoming environment has transformed the resort into a true sanctuary for relaxation and joy. We even added the tagline "Escape from Civilization" to the logo because that's exactly what Playa Sonrisa embodies.
The resort is eco-friendly as well, powered by solar energy and rainwater, but don’t worry – we offer 24/7 lights, fans, and fast Wi-Fi. Although the resort was sold as "turnkey," there was still much we wanted to do to give Playa Sonrisa a fresh facelift. We also launched a marketing campaign to attract new guests and first-time naturists. After all, the resort already had a loyal following, with guests from over 45 countries, many of whom return 8, 9, even 10 or more times! Time for us to reach some new raving fans.
Our upgrades and improvements
In just one year of ownership, we’ve made a ton of improvements. We added a stunning pool with a view, remodeled two cabins that hadn’t been in service for over 15 years, and introduced three comfortable swinging beach beds.
We also installed a large outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and smoker for the restaurant, upgraded all the linens and towels, added solar ground lights throughout the property, and established an SSI Certified Dive Center. And that’s just the start!

New this year is a prepaid meal plan option that includes everything but alcohol.
• Kayaks and snorkeling gear: Explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life just off the shore. We can show you the best spots or schedule a guided tour with our amazing team.
• SSI Certified scuba dive center: Learn to dive with our incredible SSI Dive Instructor, or try a “Try Dive” intro course. We also offer snorkeling tours through the dive center.
• Massage services: Indulge in soothing beach massages that will leave you feeling rejuvenated.
